According to reports, Chris Peterson has decided to remain at Boise State instead of taking the Stanford head coaching job. Is he really hoping that Les Miles leaves the bayou for Michigan?
While many will argue that life is Palo Alto is much better than the same in Baton Rouge, the quality of football at LSU is vastly superior to Stanford. Yes, Stanford did go 12-1 this season and won a BCS bowl game, while LSU had a 10-2 season which was considered by many to be a down season, but the Stanford season was somewhat of an aberration. The last time the Cardinal won 10 or more games was in 1992 under Bill Walsh when they went 10-3. LSU however has won two national titles in the last seven years. Stanford caught lightning in a bottle this year with the continued development of Andrew Luck and a down season by USC following the departure of Pete Carroll and the arrival of Lane Kiffin.
If indeed Les Miles does leave for Michigan, Chris Peterson would make a very interesting candidate to fill the job. We know that the spread option offense can be effective in the SEC (Urban Meyer and Florida for one), and Peterson has also proven to be a very good recruiter at Boise State. His record of 61-5 over the last five seasons, even if it has come against the WAC, is amazing. He has brought in superior talent and used it brilliantly. If he was able to convince talented players to play in Boise, he’ll easily be able to do the same at LSU, who routinely ranks in the top 10 nationally.
In a statement today (Jan 9), Peterson said he would, “continue directing the football program" at Boise State. Does this mean other options are out there for him?
LSU’s first call during their coaching search should be to Boise, Idaho.
